The first week of the rest of my life

So, I’ve been here for a week now, and what can I say? I feel like I’m on holiday.

I’ve been to CrossFit nearly every day, of which some were double sessions (either an open gym or weightlifting class before/after the workout), and I’ve met up with one of the local running groups to see what they’re all about (a super hard but fun ‘muster run’ that was 7 miles through awesome trees and trail paths). I’m trying not to do too much too soon, but it’s hard to reign it in when I get excited.

The point of this blog is to follow my journey back into fitness. Fitness. I want to stress that fitness is my main goal here. It would be quite easy for me to post up some before pictures, and compare them to how I look right before World’s Toughest Mudder in November, but all too often we focus on people’s weight and how they look, and I don’t want to perpetuate that in this blog. Of course, I think about these things occasionally, it’s hard wired into everyone’s brains, but I don’t dwell on it.

That doesn’t mean to say I’m not going to watch what I eat, on the contrary, my food intake is so important for me to perform my best. Also, it goes without saying that if I was lighter, it would make pull ups and dragging my body around an obstacle course inevitably easier, but again, if we constantly focus on how our body looks rather than what our bodies can achieve, then the body image dystopia that society is inflicted with will never cease.

Nope, instead I’m going to track my progress using pull ups and push ups.

I want to get my upper body strong, so I will be focusing on these movements over the next few months. Last year I got up to three strict pull ups. Due to my lack of training over the past few months, this dropped down to zero.

At the beginning of this week I was at ¾ of a pull up. At the end of this week I was back at 1. I think that’s a pretty good start.

In the past I’ve managed 11 strict push ups in a row, today, I’m back at 2.

I’ll post what number I’m on for each exercise every time I blog, and hopefully if everything goes to plan, the numbers will increase!

I’m not currently following any sort of nutrition plan, I’m just amalgamating lots of different things I’ve learned over the years and trying to fit it in to my schedule now, but as part of my new membership to CrossFit Outwork, I’m filling out a food diary so I can get some tips on what I’m eating. I’ll update you next time on the feedback I get.

Otherwise it’s been a great week settling in to my new job, meeting new people, and cycling regularly again. If the coming months are anything like this week I’ve just done, I’m going to be fighting fit again in no time ☺
